Service Learning at IRSC
Service learning combines classroom instruction with meaningful community projects to deepen student understanding. The benefits of service learning to students include the ability to better analyze complex problems, the development of interpersonal skills, enhanced critical thinking, and a more cultivated sense of personal efficacy. The college also benefits from a fully established service learning program through higher persistence rates, increased retention, and improved frequency of student success.
As a form of experiential education, service learning engages students in ways that allow them to see the relevance of their education to the real world. This can be impactful both academically and individually as students learn to personalize their education. The resources on this page are for faculty interested in knowing more. Please also explore the links we have compiled on the research page. Finally, consider joining the service learning workgroup to share your experiences with other faculty.
