Using Mariner to Track Experiential Learning Projects at IRSC
A system is now in place to measure the impact of experiential education projects taking place at IRSC. Faculty using one of these methods are encouraged to officially designate their classes as either service learning, applied learning, or civic engagement courses. Doing this simply involves contacting your chair or dean. Once in place your mariner display will change slightly to include four columns that can be manipulated when entering grades at the end of the semester. Faculty are asked to indicate (1) the score the student received, (2) the number of hours served, (3) the project weight, and (4) the project impact. To facilitate ease of use, three of the four categories have “fill all” options set up. Please consult the image below to see how the additional columns appear in mariner.
Experiential Learning Project Score: The score the student received.
Service Learning or Civic Engagement Hours Served: The number of hours the student served.
Project Weight: What percentage of the total course grade does this project account for?
1-10%
11-20%
21-30%
31-40%
41-50%
Over 50%
Extra Credit
Primary Project Impact: This column measures the intended impact of your project. Did your project (1) primarily involve community service hours? Did it (2) lead to the production of a tangible good that has economic value? Did it (3) primarily reinforce student learning without requiring service hours or producing a tangible good? In cases where (1) and (2) are both true, please default to (2).
